This week I go traveling to different places far away from school. I took the mrt and arrive at the Lavender station, after that, I walked two miles away and arrive at the art museum of Singapore. It’s a very beautiful architecture but was unluckily not opened for exhibition at the time. I talked with the guard of the museum who was a kind old man. He advised me to visit the national museum of Singapore which was quite near just across the street. I thanked him and then went for the direction he pointed for me. In the way, I came across Singapore Management University which was quite a magnificent building covered by green plants. I guess it’s quite convenient for students of SMU to stay at the center of the city, with easy access to various public facilities like museums. I went sightseeing in the national museum. It was really a brilliant feast of eyes and spirits.

朱若雪,ZhuRuoxue-New life start
The second week I start to select courses and prepare to new semester studying. There were some systematic wrong with my class schedule. Thanks to the teachers helping me dealing with it and finally I successfully selected my preferred courses. The DBS card thing also went on well. I visited four different bank branches to finally get the card. Only that the lessons delivered completely in English were a little difficult for me to fully understand at the beginning, but I tried hard to catch up with the instructor and I thought my English can be improved gradually during the progress. I really appreciated the chance of being completely involved in English-taught lesson, we barely had chance to take such class back in China. In addition, I found the class here give more chance to students discussing our opinions and doing handwork, rather than the instructor do all the talking.
朱若雪,Zhu Ruoxue-A first glimpse
the first week we came to this city, everything is new, surprising for me.
Some sutd students help us a lot in beginning with the life here, they company us to buy staffs in the supermarket, taste delicious local food and go traveling to Singapore famous attractions, we have built friendship with each other regardless of our difference of nation . I also want to thank the teachers of international relationship office for they run out of way to assist us to solve problems and overcome difficulties we met. It’s not easy to start living alone in a foreign country as there are a lot of things to settle at our arrival, but with the generous and timely support of sutd students and teacher, things are much easier for us. I really like the Singapore way of encouraging students to build connection with each other, teachers organized activities where we were required to communicate and get to know about the other strange students in a delightful atmosphere. In this way, it naturally reduced loneliness and stress we faced upon arrival. everything went fine and I started to adapt to the life here.
吴欣科 Wu Xinke – It is time for farewell
It is time for us to say good-bye to this cute and beautiful country, to this nice and harmonious University. I think I am glad that I will meet my old friends in ZJU several days later, but I am also sad that I am about to leave the new friends here. I won’t forget about those happy conversations with foreign friends, the experience of opening a booth to ask people register for our ShareNet App.
It is really a honor to be here.
林巾业 Lin Jinye-Study in SUTD
Studying in SUTD is an amazing experience for me. The curriculum in SUTD is very different from my home university. Typically, every lesson in SUTD has both lectures and workshop which means students not only have to listen to professors but also need to work on hand. And the school emphasis greatly on group working. Every lesson we have a learning group where we work and study together. For my major, architecture design, the school emphasis on technological study, which means students have to learn many software served for architecture design. Also, the leaning load in SUTD is a little bit heavier than my home university, and schoolmates pushed them really hard which deeply influenced my self. We can easily have access to comprehensive learning materials through the school library website. And the school has IT-care where we can fix any technical problems with our computers.
The infrastructure in school is well-equipped. The study rooms and meeting rooms are the things I appreciated most, which provide convenience for students to study late at night. Also, the school has a very good learning atmosphere. It’s very normal to see students discuss at the canteen and wherever there are a table and chairs. For school activities, the school always hold lunchtime performance which is pretty beneficial to students who loves music. In conclusion, studying in SUTD is interesting and rewarding.
陶一帆 Tao Yifan-Gardens by the Bay!
It was a wonderful and useful trip to visit gardens by the bay. I enjoyed the splendid scenery and gained some thoughts about my project.
It was amazing to see the colorful illuminates the sky. The most important features, the trees, are designed in a brunching and subdivision way. So did the patterns on the ground. And the trees incorporate energy saving strategies.
The garden really attracts a lot of people in the night. They lie down on the ground, look in to the sky and admire the beautiful scenery. And there will be music shows every night.
Although the garden provides membership for families, I’m not sure how many families will choose to join the membership because you need to walk a certain distance to access the gardens. Seems like the people there are mostly tourists.
陶一帆 Tao Yifan-Everyday Life in Singapore
Now that we have shared so much interesting moments, why don’t we see our everyday life in Singapore.
My class begins at 9:00 am, so I usually get up at 8:00 in the morning. At around 8:30 I leave the place I live in which is Anglican House to catch a bus No.2 to SUTD. If I’m lucky, then I don’t have to wait a long time for the bus to arrive, so that I can arrive on campus at around 9:00.
Then a day of classes.
After classes I stayed in the library of studio to study until around 11:00 pm. Then take the bus back.
The everyday life is ordinary but there are highlights in it too. There’s a food center right at the bus stop where you can see a bunch of people at 12:00 am. The prata there is wonderful.
Upon the gate of Anglican High School in the evening, a lot of cats will come out and an old lady has been feeding them for many years. It is such a relief to see these cute creatures after a day’s hard work.
陶一帆 Tao Yifan-Morning,SUTD library!
The library opens at 8:00 in the morning and closes at 10:00 in the evening. There are not much people in the morning after the it just opened, even when the final week is approaching.
I enjoy study in the library. In the morning the sunlight shines into the library and gradually moves out as time go by.
There are different types of study rooms in the library, such as group meeting room, individual quiet study space, open tables, sofa, etc. And the material exhibition is very meaningful, which allows us to know more about different types of materials.
李楠Li Nan – Campus Album
The design of this campus is really outstanding, because it is a young school.
I like the view of those gardens and those interesting sculptures. The structure of the gymnasium is very well designed. The facade of the hostel is very diverse. The corridors running through the whole campus allow us to go out without umbrellas.
李楠Li Nan – Learning at SUTD
The exchange of a semester is drawing to a close. I took some photos to record the study life here. There are various types of classrooms. The form of Think Tank is very conducive to cooperation and discussion. In many classrooms, almost all tables and chairs can be moved freely. And walls can also be used as whiteboards, and classrooms can be used in a variety of ways.
The design core is my major course here. The project arrangement is to design a comprehensive residential system with certain public space and commercial space. This form of residential system is very common in Singapore, but may not be so common in China, so it is interesting to try such a large-scale design here.
From time to time, some students’ work would be displayed in the teaching building, which is very interesting. About last week, there was an exhibition, a design assignment, a wind bell. The material is bamboo and metal, the color collocation is very beautiful and has the traditional charm. I like the sound of it very much, especially the sound of bamboo collision.
