王德容 Wang Derong-Universal Studio

I went to Universal Studio on October 25th, just on the Horrible Night.

At that time, there were lots of Haunted houses in Universal Studio, and many Live show  as also. Although I was very timid , I went in with my friends, hoping that I could challenge my self. However, I still overestimated myself. When I saw the actor dressed as an ghost, I was scared to run far away. While browsing the haunted house, I clenched my friends’s hands tightly and even hurt my friends. Despite the fear, I admired the dedication of the actors, who tried so hard to frighten us!

It was really a surprising night.

王德容 Wang Derong-Chinese Fiction

This course is the other course I choose in SUTD, which is about Chinese fiction, from the very beginning to the Qing dynasty. I choose it just because I like fiction very much. I had take a course about Chinese fiction in ZheJiang University on my first grade, but I do want to know how foreigners talk about Chinese fictions.

When I saw the outline of this class, it looks very similar to what I had learned in my university. When I started this class, I changed my mind. In Zhejiang university, we learned about what is fiction, how the ancients built them, what did they represent and how they developed as time goes by. Although these content also appeared in the course here, I found the teacher looked at the content of Chinese novels out of the framework of Chinese culture. I started to think about something that I had never thought before.

I felt the connection between dreams and foresight’s, people’s longing for love, and the writer’s imagination and sustenance for female characters. These experience made me re-recognize Chinese novels.

王德容 Wang Derong- Class in SUTD!

One of the course I choose is Entrepreneurship. This course is about how to start a business.

I choose this course because that I majored in product design in ZheJiang University. I have developed products many times in Zhejiang University, but I really wanted to know how other students do it. I had thought this course was just a design class in a different school before I took it. However, I found it was more than a design class at last. We developed product in a brand new way, from how could we start a business with little cost.

It was really interesting. It astonished me when I found that this way is far from what I learned in Zhejiang University. In my school, we often came up with oceans of ideas, most of which would be denied by our teacher. At last we concentrate on the one we think is most feasible, and we started to do many research on it. Finally, after getting enough information from market, users and competing product, we designed our product and finish this class. But it was totally different in this class. We have to come up with a product, and find that if there were any person who want to buy this product. We just made a prototype, and ask what do buyers think about it, then we improve it again and again. I could never forget that my teacher said “ If you don’t think about it, you are just taking another designing class.” This experience forced me to jump out of my comfort zone and I really benefit a lot from it.

王德容 Wang Derong-YEAH! Program

I participate in this event on 18th, 25th October and 15th November, during 4pm to 6:30pm for each day at Tampines West Community Club. This is really a relaxing and also interesting event. The things we need to do is to help primary school students to write homework and play with them during the event time.

I had been troubled by whether I have the ability to answer their questions as a foreigner before I came there. However, I found that I have considered too much which is not necessary at all. There are already a lot of volunteers and even many free people even for one-on-one tutoring. We just sat down and see if there was anything that we could help.

In fact, I would feel nervous if a foreigner talk to me, especially when I was not sure if I was able to completely understand what he or she said. But I truly felt relaxed in this event. The local volunteers were very friendly, most of them were local high school students, cheerful and enthusiastic, and we soon became good friends. The children here are very energetic, who were willing to play with me, not minding if I was a foreigner not good at talking. Being with those people make me have the true feeling of being integrated into this society in these days. We were from different countries, but we are playing the same game, playing the same badminton, and even watching the same videos. Although you knew it before, when you felt it yourself you were always exited.

Interetingly, I noticed that they had to take Chinese class in primary school, some of them even had a Chinese name. But when I asked them if they can speak Chinese, they said no and told me that they hated Chinese because it is too difficult. I think it is really funny, and I indirectly felt the wonderful connection between Singapore and China.

王德容 Wang Derong-MWH Flag Day

I participate in this event on 5th October during 11am to 3pm, at Tampines MRT station. This was a special event that I had never done something like that before. The things we need to do is to collect donations around this area with a can, and then give the donors some stickers in return.

At first I was afraid of doing something like this, asking for money from strangers on the street, especially when I could not speak English fluently enough. But the lady in charge of this event performed very sincere. When she handed the cans to us she said faihfully that she was very grateful for our help and wished us all the best. At that moment I thought that I had no reason not to face this matter bravely.

Although I have made myself confident, I still feel confused and timid when I was in front of a street crowded with busy people. However, when I take the courage to ask a man waiting for the bus at the platform and he put a dollar into my can without hesitate, I was overwhelmed by the great sense of accomplishment. Gradually, I was no longer timid and began to ask more people. More and more people put their change into the can, some of them even encourage me to work harder. At that moment, I was tied to the children I was helping, and really pleased from the bottom of my heart with every penny I have collected. I felt that I was not only collecting money for a welfare institution, but I am also looking for my own value in this society.

I have forgotten how much money I had collected that day, but I could not forget the way people give money to me. I remember that when a mother stopped in front of me, one of her children asked that why she gave money to me, she replied that because we need to share. I was deeply moved by it. When we live a satisfying life, we have to remember that there are still many people living in pain in this society. We do need to share, share happiness with others when we have it, and someone would share our pain when we need.

曹家扬 Cao Jiayang – Farewell to Singapore

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The period we experience in Singapore is almost to the end. I have so many feelings about it during this time.

Singapore is a small but prosperous country with booming economic and multiple cultures. You may feel you were in China, India, Thailand, Europe or other regions varying with where you are. Nut no matter what kind of culture you are in, it is always open and kind to you.

Singaporean are generally well-mannered. The waiters in stores will always greet you with smile. Cars will keep waiting behind the cross road until pedestrians pass by. If any crash happens, you will hear sorry first. These points do show Singapore’s special beauty.

And Singapore cares disadvantaged groups a lot. Wherever there is an elevator, there must be a lift nearby, which helps those disabled so much. It is often to see close malls connected by path with roof, so you don”t need to worry about bad weather. And there was I time when I needed to cross the War Memorial Park to Suntec City. But when I stepped out the MRT station, I was shocked by the design of the underground plaza, which blocked out the hot weather and left space for shopping mall. Quite a caring and wise design.

To sum up, I had so many beautiful memories about Singapore. I will always keep them in my heart. Maybe I will visit Singapore again after several years maybe not. But what I won’t forget are the happiness and movement I got here.

杨珺杰 Yang junjie- SUTD,don’t say goodbye

Time flies! The four-month exchange study life in Singapore is about to end in two months. My heart is full of perseverance. I miss the summer full of vitality, the warm and friendly teachers and classmates here, the positive and optimistic atmosphere here, and everything here. In these four months of study life, I learned to be independent, to be brave, to learn to actively communicate with others, and to learn a lot of new knowledge.

These are things I ca n’t learn in my country, and it ’s also  One of the biggest things I gains here. Although it’s parting, I don’t want to say goodbye. I hope we can meet again in the near future! Singapore, say you again!

杨珺杰 Yang junjie -Site investigation

This is the first field survey I have done since I came to Singapore to study architecture. Together with the teacher’s organization, we drove to Singapore to conduct a site survey near the city center. I’m looking forward to it and I’m very excited. This is also the first group trip for everyone.

Near the venue, we all took out paper and pen for recording and took a lot of photos. The teacher also explained a lot of methods and techniques for field investigation, which made me learn a lot of new knowledge! After the survey, my friends and I stopped by to visit nearby attractions and watched a movie! What a fulfilling and fun day!

杨珺杰 Yang junjie- Exploration on the weekend Ⅴ

On the fifth weekend of my own travel in Singapore, I went to the Singapore Art Museum with my friends. Before we came to Singapore, we had heard about this building, and the teacher often used it as a reference case in class. Give us an explanation, so this is also one of the must-visit places for us to come to Singapore.

When we arrived at the art museum, we learned that we were fortunate to have encountered a special art exhibition this year, and because we were students, we could also watch the exhibition for free, which made us all surprised and happy. After a day of excursions, we gained a little more understanding of the building and admired its wonderful design.
