史皓辰 Allen Shi-MWH Flag Day

MWH Flag Day was held on the 5th of October 2019. For this CIP event, we went to Tampines MRT station and helped raise funds for the youth-at-risk. Each of us was given a tin can and we would ask the passers-by to kindly do some donations. I expected to meet with a lot of challenges on this day, which I did, but I managed to cope with most of them in the end.

The biggest difficulty we met with, of course, was to persuade strangers into making a donation. Before the event starts, I pictured being turned down by strangers, being rolled eyes at, etc. None of these did happen at the end of the day. I took some time to fully memorize the information about the charity home and drafted a small piece of “opening speech” on my phone.

This CIP event has benefited me in many ways. I was really surprised by people’s enthusiasm to participate in charity events. Some donors set themselves as good examples by teaching their kids to donate, others would read thoroughly the material we provided and make the decision to donate with discretion. Among all of the donors, there’s this particular uncle I remember. During the session, I teamed up with another guy from Taiwan. The uncle dropped by 3 times, each time making a donation into both of our tin cans. The last time he dropped by he even brought two cups of juice he just bought in a stall. Though we declined his offer, he still gently insisted that we take it, because he thought that we were doing great work.

吴姗姗,Wu Shanshan-Blossom home refresh

Living alone at such an old age can be challenging for us, but the elderly which we get in touch with is quite different. He has abundant life experience in his past life and we can tell that he is proud of what he had done before.

As soon as we step in his home, we are shocked by its “exquisite design”. All cupboards, circuits and even his car have been remoulded by himself to make this limited space accessible and useful for any activities. He seldom purchases something because he believes that all the fortune is on the ground, all you have to do is to just pick it and renew it by your hands.

When we say goodbye to him, he said: “Today is the happiest day in my life!”. Such simple words really touch me. Our companion makes his day. I don’t know who will be the next to accompany him, but I hope more and more people can pay attention to the elderly, and more importantly, to learn from them.

史皓辰 Allen Shi-Blossom Home Refresh

On the 28th of September, we set out for Jurong East for the Blossom Home Refresh event. Our job was to clean the houses of local elderlies and have lunch with them. Tiring as it may sound, we did have a lot of fun doing the housework and chatting with local families.

After we arrived at the spot, we were divided into groups and each group was given some cleaning materials and was assigned a household. Our group walked up to the apartment and started cleaning right away. It was a family of two and the apartment was not big, so each of us took a job and we started cleaning right away. I volunteered to clean up the higher walls so they provided me with a ladder. The uncle and auntie were really kind and they offered some refreshments. After we did the cleaning, we played some card games and tangram with uncle and auntie, had lunch with them, and shared some lovely conversations. We were surprised to find that the auntie could actually speak Hokkien.

安晶琛 AnJingchen – F1 Race

This weekend is the most exciting weekend ever as we get free tickets from TF for F1! I never watched F1 racing before, so it’s a total new area for me to explore. All I know about it is the extreme speed during the competition and the amazing sound of cars. Although we can only watch from the fences, it doesn’t bother us at all. When the night comes, the real race begins. It is thrilling and exciting to see the sparks from the high-speed cars and it’s interesting to see the competitors risk their life to get the first place. While watching the race on the grassland, it suddenly strikes me that it’s never too late to catch up with the guy in front of you. Because there are many racers come to the first place for a period of time, but the final champion is out of expectation. The champion turns out to be the racer who starts at the 8th place. It’s quite amazing to see this result. In the end, the fireworks for the champion is really amazing and beautiful. After the competition, we also watch the famous DJ’s performance and everybody under the stage is dancing to the rhythm, which is the first time I experience this excitement. In a word, cool!

史皓辰 Allen Shi-Formula 1 Night Race

Thanks to Temasek Foundation, we were awarded an opportunity to watch the Singapore F1 Grand Prix upon our arrival. To be honest, I had never been the biggest fan of car racing, but watching in on the spot really made my adrenaline kick in and made me fall for the sport.

Before we left for the race, I knew about F1 nothing more than Louis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher (who is still suffering from the consequences of a skiing accident). After entering the field, my fellow students and I found ourselves a comfortable place on a huge meadow to sit down on the condition that we didn’t have access to the terrace. We treated ourselves to some nice drinks and foods and watched the whole race on the screen, together with thousands of spectators. During the race, we were lucky enough to join the crowd and watched the most passionate show ever presented by Fatboy Slim and Red Hot Chili Peppers, which was quite a bonus.

After 51 laps of arduous competition, Sebastian Vettel was the first to pass the finish line. Everyone stood up to cheer and applaud his amazing performance.

沈舒涵 Shen Shuhan- Delicious food

Shen Shu han- Playing Games

The second weekend we went to accept a training. The first time we step into the classroom we were surprised, because it is not like a formal classroom, everyone is sitting on the floor. After coming in, we know that it was a training for us to contact elders next week. So we are divided into few groups, we play many games, laughing and talking. It is a funny day but also a meaningful day!IMG_3733

王德容,Wang Derong- Bedok Dialysis Befriender

Kidney failure is a very terrible disease which many people die of all over the world. Renal dialysis is one of the treatment methods, but patients suffered a lot in the process of treatment.

We came to NKF Dialysis Centre to attend Bedok Dialysis Befriender to chat with patients on 17th Sep and 18th Sep. The staff here told us that the proceed of dialysis feel very painful and tired because all their blood were pumpted into the machine. Thereby we needed  to talk and play game with them to alleviate their suffering.

Most patients who do dialysis there were old people, and many of them could speak Chinese. On the first day I came to an old man whose parents used to be Chinese. He was very silent at firstly, then became talktive when it cames to Chinese food. His parrents lived in  GuangDong many years ago, so he liked GuangDong foos very much. He told me that tofu pudding tasted best with ginkgo. He also talked about his life. He had been working in a supermarket until he got the disease five years ago. For that he was a so diligent person, I really wished that he would recover sooner .

By the way, I tried tofu pudding after the event, it was delicious for sure.

On the next day, I came to a Malaysian patient because that there are no position surrouding Chinese patient. Unforturnately, my English was so poor to talk with him fluently and to heard him clearly. Most of time we couldn’t understand each other, but at last we made some communication trough unremitting efforts. He told me he had some Chinese friend here and they were really good people. In the game we won a can, which he told me is tasty with bread. It was really a pity that I had no chance to try.

After two days work, I not only make myself less shy to talk to the native, but also understand more about Singaporean culture. Due to the exsistence of many ethnics, Singaporean culture is diverse. Howerer, every ethnics get along very well with each other, and they accepts difference which impressed me a lot.

熊卡尔, Kaer Xiong —— The first experience as a volunteer in Singapore

Today is my first time volunteering at the Kidney Dialysis Center. Three times a week, four hours of dialysis, many dietary constraints, this is the daily life of dialysis patients.

At first, I was surprised to find that they were more optimistic and positive than I ever thought and it’s also the first time I get along with them so closely. I think such volunteer activities are very valuable. Not only can we provide more intimate and interesting activities for patients, but also profoundly educate our college students, let us realize the importance and significance of social volunteer work.

Through this activity, I realized how important it is to maintain a healthy body. Young people should always keep a good habit of exercising and pay attention to eating habits..
