Being one of the biggest financial cities all around the world & one of the most visited destinations in South East Asia, Singapore is home to many skyscrapers, various kinds of cuisines and charming tourist attractions. During these two weeks I took advantage of the time off class to take a little exploration around the town. Here’s a secret gem I found.
Jewel
Since Changi Airport is only one station or two away from SUTD, it has basically become my little sanctuary for all kinds of leisure. I would sometimes visit Jewel at night to see the amazing light show. I was fascinated by how the water, music, and light compliment one another. The food here never disappoints as well, with a wide range of options from Singaporean food like buk kut teh to some authentic gelato (lychee flavor from Birds of Paradise is my favorite).
The first day arriving at Singapore, the first impression is too hot. It feels like standing there and can sweat all day. What amazes me is that the tidiness of the city. Almost everywhere is clean and tidy, all in order.
After settling down, we walk around and take a look at this city. We had dinner at bedok, and I can see the local traditions here: the food mall. There are a few of them in China, but not like this one. Here in Singapore, I can enjoy many dishes at a low price in the mall, and some of them are really good! In addition, the culture here is very very diverse. You can find Indian food, Chinese food, Korean food, Japanese food and so on. Almost all southeastern foreigners can find the homemade dishes here.
People here are quite nice and polite. The first week we spend a lot of time for ice-breaking which lets me make friends with many foreigners. We come from different countries, however, we become friends afterwards. It’s really amazing to do that in the foreign country! The teachers are considerate and patient, they send kind reminders to us everyday in case we forget anything.
So, in all, it’s quite interesting to start new studying life here in Singapore! Quite look forward to it!
Last night, I met a black cat with white gloves and white mouth in front of Anglican House. This cat’s left ear was cut by TNR, so I knew he is a boy. I fed him with the kitty snack I bought just now. He was so trusted on people. And his fur is really health for a strayer. I called him Glove.
This morning and tonight, we met again. Glove was too shy to eat the snack in my hand last night and this morning, I had to put them on the ground. But tonight, he was willing to do this. When i was giving Glove snack, a lady on bike stopped by us. Glove walked to her and the lady called him “White Mao”. They played for a while. Then the lady kindly asked my name, and told me her name was Mimi. Mimi told me her daughter often feed White Mao too. Mimi lived nearby Anglican House. Before leaving, she said, “See you tomorrow!” It was so warm for me an exchange student.
Near the gate of the high school, there’s another stray cat. But he (i’m not sure he is a boy or a girl ) wasn’t have TNR yet, and seemed less healthy than White Mao. He was not afraid of people too. I gave him some snack and leave.

There is a vast lawn in front of the Tanah Merah MRT. At first I thought it was a building site to be developed, but then I accidentally saw a sign indicating that it was a public land. I saw many residents come here to take a walk with their pets, and there are children and adults playing on the lawn. I really like this kind of life scene.

This week I am busy with all kinds of assignment need to be done by the end of the term,
I need to work on the design project, write my essay for micro-economic. Also my project back in Zhejiang university is about to sum up, I got to contact with my team members on wechat to update the progress. There in deed I am nostalgic for the days I spent here in SUTD. There I met so many lovely people who I shall never forget and I hope our friendship will last for long time in life. I get to know about various cultural difference in this period and many interesting things happen in other countries which really broaden my horizons. Probably I will continue my postgraduate in Singapore due to the high standard of college education and well-developed society of Singapore.
This week is quite terrible for me indeed. The disaster started when I accidentally dropped a fresh egg on my computer key board. Afterwards I fell into the unending procedure of traveling from one repairing stores to another. I also sought help from the professional support on phone, but just can’t find a way to work it out. Together with the great guilty due to the possibility of ruining my computer which was just bought within two years. But I am so lucky to know a friend who is very professional in computer hardware. He helped me opened the computer, check the motherboard and wiped the egg remains on the computer, luckily the egg seemed did not flow on to the motherboard and after cleaning, the computer can work as well as usual. I am so grateful that I can meet someone who is so warm-hearted to help others. I just feel so lucky after this. And this accident really reminds me to be careful with my computer, and keep everything in my room in order.
this week I was preparing for my final essay of the class micro economics, I have never searched for English academic paper on the internet before, and the professor of the class recommend the ‘google scholar’ for us to search for academic references. Indeed I find it’s difficult to focus on the content all in English version. But I think I can learn more in this way. But what bother me is that many articles in the google research do not have free access. The payment required is a bit too high for me. And I wonder how to deal with that problem.
this week my design group is busy with our prototypes, I work late into night to make a prototype graphic drawing, it’s quite tiring but I learn a lot in this process. I strengthen my skill of using software such as Auto cad and photoshop. I realized that we must do practicing on our own to actually get command of certain skill. Only when we do it ourselves can we get command of the software. And I like to do these creative work. also, I speak in front of class to explain my prototype which is a challenging job for me because my oral English is not good enough. but I enjoy the process of speaking bravely which I might not do in other circumstance. And I realize I really need to practice more in order to convey my idea fluently and well-organized. Or maybe I should prepare more carefully before I actually speak.
