沈楠菲Shen Nanfei-Volunteer work

On 15th September, we took part in a volunteer work about fundraiser for disables people.

That day was Flag Day. It meant people would donate for those who need help on that day. The organization of this activity was Handicaps Welfare Association. On that day, each of us got a stack of stickers and a collection jar which you could only put money in but couldn’t get it out. All of us should hold the jar standing at Tempines station to let passers-by to donate and gave a sticker to those donors.

It was a hard work since we have to stood for a whole day. At first I tried to stop passers-by and asked them for donations, but later I found that there was some suspicion of forcing them to donate in this way. Then I just stood quietly against the pillar, and look sincerely at passers-by.

I was so shocked that even though I did nothing, there were still so many people who were willing to donate. At the end of that day my jar was full. I swear in china people won’t do like that, it is not because we don’t have sympathy but we afraid to be cheat. I can see from it that Singaporeans trust each other very much, and they willing to help others since some of they even donate more than 5 dollars.IMG_5967

吴柳青 Wu Liuqing – Help in volunteer activities.

This weekend we spend a day helping the donation work to handicap people. I stand along the road, holding a small bottle to collect money given by passerbys. What surprise me is that citizens in Singapore always be initiative to donate, I just stood there and they will put money into the small bottle unpromptedly, which is so different from I see in China.

So I try to think about the reason behind this.

What I think most important is that, the donate activities is open and transparent. There have the name of the organization on the bottle and also every bottle have its number so people can know where the money goes. They can confirm that the money is for people who needed.

It’s a good idea to build the trust between citizen and the government or organizations in this way which is something that China can learn from.

林莹Lin Ying – Raise Funds for HWA

On Saturday 15/09/18, we worked together with wheelchair beneficiaries from the Handicapped Welfare Association (HWA) to raise funds for their cause.

Parents and seniors with children are more willing to take the initiative to donate. The parents will give the coins to the children, let the children donate, and cultivate the child’s compassion and social responsibility. This makes me feel that adult education for children is very meaningful.

I will be embarrassed at first, especially in the passenger transportation center where people come and go. I am still worried that I will be misunderstood and I am afraid that I cannot explain the purpose of the donation to passers-by. But then, in the face of friendly passers-by, the tension in my heart slowly dissipated.

I learned from this service experience that I have to be brave enough to express what you are doing, to express things that will make others understand what you are doing, and to support you. The most important thing is to take this step bravely. At the same time, when faced with the unfortunate people in the world, perhaps a little help is a great warmth for them.

蔡光锡 Cai Guangxi – 2018 Formula 1!

The most memorable experience this week must be that we were given a chance by Temasek Foundation International to the 2018 Formula 1 on September 16th. We spent a really awesome night watching the amazing show and the F1 race. The roaring engine sound on the track and the cheers from the thousands of spectators showed the energetic of Singapore, which made me really excited.

林巾业 Lin Jinye – Flag Day!

Today we are required to raise funds for the Handicaps Welfare Association from 8:30 am to 6 pm, We assisted wheelchair beneficiaries from the Handicapped Welfare Association in Tampines Mall and the neighbourhood. At first, we were told that every two of us would be arranged with one beneficiary, while at last there were not enough beneficiaries so that some of us went to ask for donation individually. After a whole day of collecting, I was exhausted and also benefited a lot. In the beginning, every time when people saw us but passed away without any donations, I always felt upset and helpless especially because I was collecting individually without any wheelchair beneficiaries.

However, I made it to the end and gained a quiet heavy jar fulfilled with coins. During the day, I found out that the probability of getting donations depended a lot on the place we choose. Therefore, I switched to the exit of MRT stations and the exit of the mall with heavy traffic and crowd people instead of the transport road of two MRT lines. And kept smiling at the passersby and tried to make eye contact with them. After the event, I was more convinced that always being persistent and faithful in ourselves truly helped to chase our goals.IMG_3610

徐子珂 Xu Zike – Donation day

On September 15th, I worked with my classmates as volunteers to raise money for the disabled. We chose the fundraising location at the Tampines subway station with a large traffic flow.

After a day of work, I found that this kind of fundraising mechanism is very mature in Singapore, and the residents of Singapore are also very friendly. Although they are in a rush, they are willing to stop and offer their love.

蔡光锡 Cai Guangxi – Volunteer Work Today!

On Friday, we came to the Tempnis MRT Station to do the volunteer work. We helped the old people who are disabled and collected money from the passengers for them. Actually, in China, I have never heard a similar organization like this one, which organizes these activities regularlly. Which touched me most is that the strange passengers are really willing to donate money for these disalbled people. Once you donate, you will get a cute sticker which presents that you have done something good for society. Spending the whole day outside, I feel tired but substantial.

叶旎Ye Ni-HWA program on flag day

we gathered at Tempiness Mall on 15th September and then assist wheelchair to gain donation from passersby. We mainly went to MRT stations, bus stop, crossroads and commercial corridor. The activity last for half a morning and a whole afternoon, using a can marked with HWA logo to get coins.

The main challenge for me in this program was to keep faith when waiting passersby to reach out a helping hand, especially when it came to late afternoon, at the time that we had already stood for a whole day and when the donations got less frequent. One of the passersby told me that there were too many of us. And I started to think whether we had brought pressure to them. Nonetheless, even when the daylight gradually faded out, there were still some kind people, mainly the old and parents with kids, who were willing to give each of us a coin to show their care for handicap and also for the purpose to inspire us. Besides, there were even some people came to give you a coin when you are walking through the zebra crossing, and you don’t even have the chance to express a decent thank you. I was touched not only by the amount of sympathy shown by strangers on the street, but also by their will to transfer virtues to young generations.
