One thing impresses me a lot is that Singapore is really colorful!

Every block is painted with bright colors. Unlike China we are used to see plain colors which are close to the original colors of the bricks.

Haha, more interestingly, some food here is also so colorful, like Kueh.

So colorful that I dare not to give them a try, haha.

Actually I believe that color can bring us happy mood. Singapore is a happy country for me, people are leading a comfortable and satisfying life. Next time if I feel upset, I will try the colorful food here!

徐子珂 Xu Zike – New learning tools

Today we visited Sutd’s Fablab and saw machines that I have never operated before, such as laser cutters, 3d printers, etc. I learned that we will be requested to use these machines to make models in our later studies, I am looking forward to it.

沈楠菲Shen Nanfei-Happy Buddy Day

On buddy day, all our exchange students from different countries are divided into four groups. Each group is led by three buddies from SUTD to visit Singapore.

This time the Buddy Day has an interesting playing method. Each group is given one piece of paper with a list of tasks to complete. The task includes going to famous places of Singapore and taking picture with them and eating famous food of Singapore.

We try very hard to do as many items as we can. I am so shocked by Singapore’s super convenient public transportation that we can go to so many places even in one day.

During this activity I learn a lot of interesting places in Singapore, not only those well-known tourist attractions but also small meaningful places that worth to try. I begin to shape a whole impression of Singapore.

Although I feel so regret that we can’t go into those buildings to look carefully about them because of the limited time, I promise I will go there on other days.

蔡光锡 Cai Guangxi – Visit the Fab Lab!

Today, SUTD’s students showed us around the Fab Lab at our school.

Before I came to Singapore, I have heard that SUTD’s fab lab was very great because most of the equipment there was up to date. The school attaches great importance to the safety of equipment, and we are required to wear protective glasses during the visit.
There are a lot of 3D printers here and they are free for teachers and students to use. Because I am very interested in this aspect, so I am really excited!

叶旎 Ye Ni – Buddy Day with SUTDers

Before attending classes, the school planned a buddy day just like what ZJU did in the last term when SUTD students came to Zhejiang for exchange program. The interesting part is that we all had a task, that is, to complete missions like visiting some places, eating food one by one.

Like all of the foreign visitors, we went to places like Marina Bay, but we also tried a kind of dessert there, which is an ice-cream sandwich. Food like this was never familiar to friends from western country but they finally decided to have a try since we insisted it was delicious. And then they said, “It’s absolutely weird but it is good.” And maybe that’s how we help ourselves fit into Singapore, by discovering something strange but really good.

As an architecture students, I was also exciting about all the boldly designed architectures along the way. Rather then fill all the functions into a normal volume, they try to activate a good shape with attractive spaces and use various terrain to create different feelings when travelling through.

What I found also intriguing is that there are all kinds of statues around the bay. They each tells a small or big story about the place, a history or a spirit.

吴柳青Wu Liuqing- buddy day exploring Singapore

The day after arriving Singapore, we attended the ‘amazing race’ led by friends from SUTD. The race gave many tasks and the group who complete most tasks will win.

We tried to go to as many land mark buildings as we can and ate many local foods that I never saw before.

From the trip, we have a look at the real Singapore that combines different culture and different life style, which also form the beautiful and charming country.

陶一帆 Tao Yifan-First Day in Singapore

Exploring Singapore – Episode 1

When I arrived at the Anglican House, the place where I was going to stay for the next three months, it was almost dawn. I thanked Mel for taking me there and waved goodbye. I wandered in the corridor feeling the cool morning wind. Everything was familiar to me, yet everything was new to me.

The very next few hours, I was passing through buildings after buildings with my friends, exploring the beautiful country. What impressed me most was that Singapore is a multicultural country. The city blends Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and English cultures and religions. You can feel it when you are taking MRT and seeing people dressed differently, hearing them speak different languages. By the way it’s meaningful that Singapore dedicates to provide shade for pedestrians. There are corridors that connect bus stop and the MRT station for example, so people do not have to expose to direct sunlight or rain drops.

And you can also feel the multicultural atmosphere through food. Almost every food court has Thai food, Korean food, Japanese food, Chinese dim sum, Indian food, etc. We had chicken rice for dinner, which is a special dish in Singapore.

At night, we watched the beautiful night view from the top of one building. It was really wonderful to see how the city flows and shines at night.

That’s all for the first day!

林莹Lin Ying – Nice to Meet You Singapore!

WechatIMG2239    I am very excited about being able to come to SUTD, but I also realize that this is a challenging thing. Facing a new and unknown social environment and campus learning life is very interesting for me who have never traveled outside.
It was not until the moment I got off the plane that I realized how beautiful the country was called the “garden”. From the airport to the school is not far away, we spent the time to appreciate the green scenery along the way, and then arrived at the school.

The architecture of this university is very modern and I like it very much. We are honored to hear Mel’s introduction to the school for us. She made us feel warm. Mel’s introduction is meticulous, and we are very grateful to her. I hope we can have a good time in these three and a half months.
