I participate in this event on 18th, 25th October and 15th November, during 4pm to 6:30pm for each day at Tampines West Community Club. This is really a relaxing and also interesting event. The things we need to do is to help primary school students to write homework and play with them during the event time.
I had been troubled by whether I have the ability to answer their questions as a foreigner before I came there. However, I found that I have considered too much which is not necessary at all. There are already a lot of volunteers and even many free people even for one-on-one tutoring. We just sat down and see if there was anything that we could help.
In fact, I would feel nervous if a foreigner talk to me, especially when I was not sure if I was able to completely understand what he or she said. But I truly felt relaxed in this event. The local volunteers were very friendly, most of them were local high school students, cheerful and enthusiastic, and we soon became good friends. The children here are very energetic, who were willing to play with me, not minding if I was a foreigner not good at talking. Being with those people make me have the true feeling of being integrated into this society in these days. We were from different countries, but we are playing the same game, playing the same badminton, and even watching the same videos. Although you knew it before, when you felt it yourself you were always exited.
Interetingly, I noticed that they had to take Chinese class in primary school, some of them even had a Chinese name. But when I asked them if they can speak Chinese, they said no and told me that they hated Chinese because it is too difficult. I think it is really funny, and I indirectly felt the wonderful connection between Singapore and China.
